Mercedes Martinez (nee Maldonado) died peacefully at her home Tuesday, October 13th. She was 86 years old. Mercy (as she was called by loved ones) is survived by her 3 sons – Thomas, Mario, and Karl, along with 9 grandchildren – Isabelle, Alexandra (Joseph), Daniel, Johnathan, Mario, Jr., Sydney, Maximus, Michael, and Samuel, and one great granddaughter – Noelle. Mercy’s ex-husband – Tomas, passed way in 2009. She also leaves behind 2 sisters, a brother, and many nieces and nephews.
Born in Puerto Rico, Mercy left home at 18 to pursue the “American Dream” and made her way to Philadelphia, PA. Mercy raised her family in the Fox Chase section of Philadelphia where she made lifelong friends.
Mercy spent many years working as a seamstress in the upholstery department at Oscar Huber Furniture before leaving to join Health Partners in Center City. It was here where Mercy worked in the customer service department putting her fluency in English and Spanish, her eagerness to learn, and her love and compassion for others to use every day.
Mercy will be fondly remembered for her big heart, warm personality, bright smile, fantastic cooking skills (her Spanish chicken and rice was enjoyed by many), love of family and friends (especially her love for her grandchildren) and her Christian faith.
A private memorial service will be held at Richardson Funeral Home in Philadelphia. Saturday October 24th.
