Lorna May Grant, affectionately called, “Miss Girlie, Mother, Mamma G, Grandma, Ninny,” was born July 10, 1937 in Kitson Town, St. Catherine. She was the last of six children to her parents Sarah Reid (Mammy) and Richard Daley (Pappy).
As a young girl, Girlie spent her early years in Kitson Town but later relocated to Middleton in Linstead, St. Catherine with her mother. It was there in Middleton where she met Sylvester Grant whom she marries in 1975.
Lorna was a hard worker, working most of her life from a young age. She worked at Jamaica Citrus Growers as Canteen Manager for several years and was very proud to earn the love and respect of the staff she served.
In 1979 when her husband passed, she became both mother and father to her six children. She was a true believer in discipline. She never entertained the thought of ‘sparing the rod and spoiling the child’—because she wanted the best in life for all her children. Lorna was a stylish person; she took pride in the way she looked. A true ‘fashionista’ at heart.
Lorna truly lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures of serving the Lord. She was heavily involved in church while living in Jamaica and served as Head Deaconess, Superintendent and a Chorister at the Bog Walk S.D.A. church. She loved spending time with her family and friends, giving counsel and visiting with the elders in her community. Lorna had an uncanny ability to reach people in a deep and positive way-always giving. She was very kind to people and opened her home and hearts to many over the years.
Lorna retired around 1995 and later relocated to the United States in 2003. She spent her time bonding with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, becoming heavily involved in the church communities wherever she went, as well as travelling to Jamaica to visit with loved ones and friends.
Lorna battled several illnesses throughout her life. She survived an aneurism, a blood clot in her lungs, among others. Sadly, Lorna May Grant lost her long battle with dementia on May 14, 2020 and died peacefully at the age of 83, in the home of her son in Philadelphia.
She is survived by her 6 children, Yvonne, Janet, Glen, Pat, Sharon, Dave and an adopted son Mikey. 17 Grandchildren, 29 Great-Grandchildren. She will be sorely missed
May her soul rest in eternal glory, we love and miss you!
