David 83, passed away on 1/15/22 surrounded by his loving family.
David met Anna, the love of his life in 1956 and was blessed to be married to his best friend for 59 years. David is also survived by his daughter Denise (Frank), and son Douglas (Eileen), and his four grandchildren, Danielle, Briana, David Paul, and Christina. David is predeceased by his parents, Raymond Morrell and Ruth (Morell) Morrell, and his loving sister Shirley.
David proudly began his career with the Philadelphia Police Department in Fairmount Park on 6/6/60 and rose through the ranks to Lieutenant than the Park Police joined the Philadelphia Police Dept. on 6/24/77 Lt. Morrell began his new direction after attending Northwestern University Traffic Institute (1976-77). On 6/16/82 he was promoted to Captain of Police Radio. On 3/4/83 he was assigned to the 5th Police District where he met Officer Ron Janka and made him his aide for the rest of his Police tenure. On 4/9/84 he was assigned to the 26th Police District. It was here in 1986 that the highlight of his career was to be awarded the first George Fencl Award given by the Philadelphia Daily News which was given to the Philadelphia Police Officer who most exemplified compassion, fairness, and civic commitment. When the Inspector's test was announced, David studied relentlessly and was promoted to Inspector and assigned briefly to the Civil Affairs Division on 6/25/91 and subsequently to the Internal Affairs Division on 9/30/91 until his retirement on 12/27/93. Privately, David was a deeply religious man and enjoyed reading the Bible faithfully. He was a fitness enthusiast enjoying long walks and playing racquetball. He and Officer Janka often walked across the Benjamin Franklin Bridge at lunch and played racquetball on other days.
Upon retirement, David volunteered at Family Stations Inc. and became Vice President and Mission Director. He led at least 45 mission trips to all continents except Antarctica. He treasured his time enjoying his family and friends and traveling with his wife Anna.
Burial will be on January 27th at Hill Crest Memorial Park, 500 Delsea Dr., Sewell, NJ at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, to honor Dave’s memory, the family has asked for donations to be made to the South Jersey Shore Walk to End Alzheimer’s, Team Annihilate Alzheimer’s. This team was started to honor Dave when he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, and now will be continued in his memory.
